The story behind Myrtlebank Roaming Farms

As a kid, Belinda spent loads of time exploring her family’s farm

She’d watch her grandfather work the land, and dream about one day doing the same making a living from the land she loved so much.

Years later, after living and working in Melbourne, Belinda moved back to the area with her two eldest kids. Her parents had taken over the family farm by then, and together they started selling the farm’s beef at the local farmers markets to bring in a bit of extra income.

One day at the market, the manager asked Belinda if she knew anyone with chooks.

“He asked me if we had any chooks on the farm because the local egg supplier had pulled out. I didn’t, but I saw an opportunity, and as soon as the market finished, I raced home and bought my first 80 hens

That’s how Myrtlebank Roaming Eggs started.

It wasn’t smooth sailing at first. The hens were ex-battery hens, but with time and care, they settled in, their feat ers grew back, and they started laying again.

From those humble beginnings, Myrtlebank Roaming Eggs grew into what is now Myrtlebank Roaming Farms, home to happy, free range hens, grassfed cattle and sheep.

These days, you’ll find Belinda’s poultry and livestock roaming freely under the watchful eye of Chickaletta, a giant chook sculpture that’s become something of a local landmark.

Nearly ten years in, Belinda’s still chasing the same dream she had as a kid: living off the land, offering paddock to plate, and doing what she loves every day.
